Nursing Resources
Both medical libraries have a current collection of nursing journals and books on the shelf that can help you with your clinical questions, policies and procedures, and continuing education. Most books are available for check out; journals do not leave the library, however, you may make a copy of an article for your use.
In addition to print resources, CHN Medical Libraries also provide many electronic resources (Internet access is required). When you are on a CHN campus, just click on the resource you'd like to use; no username or password is required for access.
If you are off-campus, you will need to use a username and password. These are issued by the CHN Medical Libraries; just fill out the form available at the link "Register for off-site use." You will receive the username and password via email.
Tucson Heart Hospital is now considered part of the Carondelet Health Network; when on-site, no username or password is needed to access these resources.
Searching the Nursing Literature
CINAHL, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, is one of the options to search the scholarly nursing literature. CINAHL is available via EBSCO, and this option will become our primary interface to search CINAHL. Click on the EBSCO (all databases) link under the QuickLinks column of the homepage to select CINAHL.
Nursing Consult is also available for you; it presents the latest evidence-based literature via an interface which can search across books, journals, drugs, guidelines, and other nurse oriented content, all at the same time.
Other options to search the nursing literature include PubMed/MEDLINE or by searching the MEDLINE database in OVID. Just limit your searches to "nursing journals" in MEDLINE to do this.
If you are not familiar with searching these databases, don't despair! Included in the Medical Libraries' services is the option to have a Librarian perform a literature search for your work projects.
The Medical Librarians will also be offering classes on how to search, along with an introduction to all the electronic resources. Announcements regarding updated classes will be posted on the Library Classes page, available on the homepage, so stay tuned!
Electronic Journals & Books
To access a list of electronic nursing journals available to you, click on the Journals link on the homepage, change the search selector dropdown menu to "Title contains," and search for NURS. You will come up with over 150 electronic nursing publications from which you can download articles.
A more comprehensive listing of all the Medical Libraries' electronic journal holdings can also be found on our page at the E-Journals link; easy access is provided by browsing the A - Z journals list if you'd like to see if CHN has access to a particular journal in electronic format.
Our electronic book collection includes such nursing titles as the current editions of Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses, and Spark and Taylor's Nursing Diagnosis Reference Manual. Other e-books such as the Guide to Culturally Competent Health Care and Delmar's Guide to Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests can be accessed at the Textbooks link. Others, such as Taber's and Stedman's medical dictionaries, have even easier access points at the QuickLinks section of our homepage.
New: Another set of nursing e-books is now availabe through OVID. From the list of Resources in OVID, choose Books @ OVID. From this page, you can search within all the books of the collection, or within a single book. Notice the "Limit to Book" option that allows this. To see all the titles available in this collection, at the top of the page just under the Wolters Kluwer logo, click on the link to Books.
